"Bishkek-Mandaniyat" is a short, (1 page), monthly newsletter containing announcements of cultural activities, (mainly in Bishkek). (Madaniyat is Kyrgyz for "culture").

The idea for the newsletter arose simply because we often hear about events only a few days before they happen - sometimes on the day itself, (and sometimes even after they have happened), which makes planning difficult. The newsletter includes brief information about a selection of various cultural activities (theater, cinema, exhibitions, etc.) and is produced as an A4 page in a pdf file, easy to print and display, and comes in two versions: Russian and English.

Anyone who would like to receive a copy each month, (in either language, or both, free of charge), or knows of forthcoming events which could be included can send a request to: madaniyat@celestial.com.kg.

Alternatively, it is possible to download latest issue from this page (in English) or using this link (Russian version).

Where to go:

The Museum of Applied Art at the "Rarity" bookshop includes ancient utensils, horse equipment, books, jewelry, samples of national dress. Entrance is free. It is possible to agree beforehand with the staff for a guided excursion.

At the same place there is a teahouse, stylized as a Kyrgyz yurt. The yurt's decoration consists of traditional interior's objects such as shyrdak (felt carpet); old-style chests; kitchenware and some items of horse harness. You can sit both on the floor of the yurt, near a low Oriental table or choose modern furniture by the entrance.

Visitors are offered black or green tea with sweets for a very reasonable price. Relaxed atmosphere, attentive staff and cozy design make an ordinary tea drinking a memorable leisure time.

Shop hours: Monday to Saturday - 10:00-18:00, Sunday: 10:00-17:00. Address: Pushkin Street, 78, on the East side of "Ala-Too" square.
